Male actors in the Macedon Ranges are in short supply according to a local playwright. Kyneton's Darren Brealey is unable to cast two roles in his upcoming production, Separating The Dust.
"I don't think there's a lot of male actors around in that age group (45-55)." Darren said, "I've advertised through local theatre companies, Kyneton Theatre Company, Castlemaine Theatre Company and the Mount Players, I put it on Facebook as well and also to my subscriber list on my website and on professional websites like Dare to Audition and Star Now."
Darren is not alone in the struggle to cast adult male actors. Kyneton Theatre Company had to pull its production of Arsenic and Old Lace when it was unable to cast 11 male roles.
"It really comes down to simply a shortage of men," KTC president, Bronwyn Neill said. "I don't know whether it comes down to lack of interest, or wether people aren't willing to explore theatre."
Darren is awaiting his auditions in April to see if the two male roles can be cast for his play which will tour Central Victoria in the 2010 Victorian Drama League One Act Play season.
"It's quite possible and it's quite available for anyone and everyone to be involved, it's not out of reach at all," Darren said.
